Two adverbs govern how tourists should dress in India: comfortably and respectfully. What is comfortable is not always respectful, and visa versa, so this seriously limits the dress code for many visitors. You don't need to procure a whole new Indian wardrobe of tunics and drawstrings pants -- though it's not a bad idea given the weather -- but you do need to leave sleeveless shirts and shorts at home.
